BP (BP) plunged 12% today, after reporting that its latest “Top Kill” effort has failed, and speculation regarding the company’s future is starting to heat up. According to a report in Bloomberg, the cost to insure BP’s debt, along with the price it will need to pay to issue bonds, increased dramatically this morning. The developments have analysts questioning if BP will be a standalone company in the future. The report highlights Dougie Youngson, an analyst at the London-based investment bank Arbuthnot Securities Ltd., who explains, “Given the collapse in the share price and the potential for it to fall further we expect that it could become a takeover target — particularly if its operating position in the U.S. becomes untenable.”
