Apple / Samsung ...la guerre fait juste commencer

Samsung Electronics said today that it would seek to block the sale of the iPhone 4S in France and Italy, claiming that Apple’s newly unveiled smartphone violated its patents.
In seeking a court injunction against its rival in two major European markets, Samsung, of South Korea, was getting more aggressive in its ever-expanding patent battle with Apple. Samsung said each of its injunction requests would cite two patent infringements related to wireless telecommunications technology, specifically the so-called Wideband Code Division Multiple Access standards for mobile handsets.
Samsung planned to file for preliminary injunctions in other countries after further review, the company said without elaborating.
“The infringed technology is essential to the reliable functioning of telecom networks and devices,” Samsung said in a statement. “Apple has continued to flagrantly violate our intellectual property rights and free ride on our technology, and we will steadfastly protect our intellectual property.”
Comment from Apple, which is based in California, was not immediately available.
The two electronics giants are locked in about 20 legal disputes over patents in nine countries, including Australia, Britain, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands and the United States

In September the RapNet Diamond Index for 1.00 ct. polished diamonds fell 4.5% to 99.57 (after a 4% drop in August).

Rare Earth stocks took a noticeable hit this week after JP Morgan analyst Michael Gambardella warned that this year's massive run-up in rare earth prices was being driven by speculation. Outside North America, officials from China - who essentially controls a monopoly on the rare earth sector - argue that rare earth prices are likely to remain high, however. Groupon ....oups !!

AMR Corporation (NYSE: AMR) is in trouble. That is at least what the rumor mill is trying to signal. What may seem like aggressive reporting over the weekend has added fuel to the fire of the rumor mill today. The problem is that AMR’s problems run very deep. The issue of American Eagle and the on-again-off-again sale, spin-off, IPO, and other chatter has not ever been able to help the company. Reports from the WSJ and MarketWatch, both under Dow Jones and News Corp , have issued reports using the dreaded “B” word… “Bankruptcy.

Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN) makes no money on its new Kindle Fire tablet PC. That may be a sign that it will seek to take market share from Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) and hope that content sales or a drop in the costs to make the Fire will improve margins.
According to iSuppli, “A preliminary virtual estimate conducted by the IHS iSuppli Teardown Analysis Service places Kindle Fire’s bill of materials cost at $191.65. With the addition of manufacturing expenses, the total cost to produce the Kindle Fire rises to $209.63.”
The firm added, “When further costs outside of materials and manufacturing are added in—and the $199 price of the tablet is factored along with the expected sales of digital content per device—Amazon is likely to generate a marginal profit of $10 on each Kindle Fire sold........
