China's electricity consumption rose 11.9% year on year to 3.12 trillion kW hours in the first eight months of this year, according to the National Energy Administration.
Fixed asset investments in China's railroads declined 11.5% year on year to ¥357.72 billion in the first eight months of this year, the Ministry of Railways said. Railway passenger traffic totaled 1.27 billion people and cargo traffic totaled 2.59 billion tons over the period, up 11.8% and 7.8% year on year respectively.
The number of cellphone billing service users in China is likely to reach 220 million and the industry's revenues are expected to grow 78.8% to ¥5.24 billion in 2011, according to Analysys International. Revenues are expected to surge to ¥23.51 billion by 2013.
China's entrepreneur confidence index will decline 5.6 points to 70.2 in Q3 2011 compared to a quarter earlier, according to a central bank survey of 5,000 business owners.
China's online travel service revenues hit ¥200 billion in 2010, making up 15% of total tourism revenues, according to the China National Tourism.

China's retail sales rose 17% year on year to ¥1.47 trillion in August, bringing the total amount for the first eight months of 2011 to ¥11.49 trillion, up 16.9% from a year earlier, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
China's franchise stores are expected to double in number to 800,000 and employ over 10 million people by the end of 2015, according to the China Chain Store & Franchise Association.
China's online retail sales shot up 74% year on year to ¥370.7 billion in 1H 2011, according to Analysys International.
Retail sales of home improvement products in China are expected to exceed ¥3 trillion by 2015, British consultancy Frost & Sullivan predicted. The value was ¥1 trillion last year, including ¥600 billion from furniture, ¥80 billion from lamps and ¥60 billion from floor boards.
Suning Appliance Co (SHE: 002024), China's largest chain store by revenue, aims to generate ¥8 billion in revenues from online retail sales in 2011.
RT-Mart, a leading Chinese hypermarket chain operated by Sun Art Retail Group Ltd (HKG: 6808), plans to invest ¥1 billion building its 160th store in Dezhou, Shandong province.
Inter Ikea Centre Group, the developer of the world's largest home-furnishings retailer, is boosting the size of three malls it is building in China and plans a fourth in Shanghai on huge demand for shop leases, Bloomberg reported. Ikea Group's mall developer plans to spend ¥4 billion on a Shanghai shopping center, which may open in 2016, managing director John Tegner said.
Japanese supermarket chain Jusco said it plans to open at least 100 stores in Guangzhou over the next decade.
H&M opened its first store in Fujian's provincial capital, Fuzhou. The Swedish fast-fashion clothing retailer currently operates 61 stores in China, including 11 in Shanghai, nine in Hong Kong and eight in Beijing.

If we can’t get the Chinese to ease up on US solar panel makers, at least we’re getting them to eat our food. A new research note indicates that McDonald’s Corp. (NYSE: MCD) is expecting to build about up to 200 new stores a year in China this year with a goal of 2,000 stores in the country by the end of the 2013 fiscal year, up from about 1,350 today. Both Starbucks Corp. (NYSE: SBUX) and Yum! Brands Inc. (NYSE: YUM) are also making significant expansion moves in China.
Today’s note from Sterne Agee puts McDonald’s at the top of the list against its competitors in China, noting that it believes the company “will gain market share vs. nearly every competitor” in the fast food business. The
report goes on to note that McDonald’s return on investment currently stands at 23.3% for the company’s Asia Pacific/Middle East/Africa region and that the return on incremental invested capital is expected to reach 47.6% within 3 years.

Speculation that China may help rescue peripheral European debt markets from oblivion is consistent with Beijing’s strategic interests in the region and a prudent back-stopping of its euro-denominated investments.
Reports on Monday from The Wall Street Journal and Financial Times said Italy’s finance minister met last week with a delegation of Chinese officials — including the head of China’s sovereign wealth fund — in an attempt to persuade Beijing to buy a large amount of Italian sovereign debt.

Diesel engine maker Cummins on Monday saw its price target cut by analysts at JPMorgan.The firm maintained its “Neutral” rating on CMI but lowered its price target from $132 to $113. That new target suggests a smaller 28% upside to the stock’s Friday closing price of $88.16.
Cummins shares, which have fallen almost 20% year-to-date, fell $1.91, or -2.2%, in premarket trading Monday.
The Bottom LineShares of Cummins Inc. have a 1.81% dividend yield, based on Friday’s closing stock price of $88.16. The stock has technical support in the $83-84$ price area. If the shares can firm up, we see overhead resistance around the $95-$96 price levels.

Foreign Companies in China Roundup



General Motors Co (NYSE: GM) said its sales in China rose 13.4% year on year to 205,885 vehicles in August. The US automaker said it plans to introduce 60 models to China over the next five years.
Google Inc (NASDAQ: GOOG) said it has had its license to operate its search engine in China renewed. The world's top search engine has been losing market share in the country to local rival Baidu Inc (NASDAQ: BIDU) since January 2010 when it redirected all requests made on the mainland to its uncensored server in Hong Kong.
Hilton Hotels & Resorts said it plans to open 100 hotels in China, including 40 luxury resorts, over the next five years to step up its upscale hospitality business in the country.
Audi said it sold 27,858 vehicles in China in August, up 26% from a year ago.
Nissan Motor Co said it sold 94,700 vehicles in China in August, up 26.1% from a year ago.
Daimler AG said its Mercedes-Benz brand sold 13,812 vehicles in China during the month of August and 120,200 vehicles in the first eight months of 2011, up 3.2% and 35.8% year on year respectively.
Honda Motor Corp (NYSE: HMC) will recall 255,766 vehicles made in collaboration with Guangzhou Automobile Group Co due to flawed automatic window switches that could cause short circuiting.
LG Corp said it would close its cellphone R&D center in Beijing and lay off half of the employees there. The South Korean electronics maker plans to combine R&D and its production facility, which is based in Shandong province, to boost efficiency.
