terres rares....up-down-bullish-bearish..etc...

Shares of Avalon Rare Metals (AVL.to), the Canadian rare earths miners, are soaring 4% and leading a rally in the rare earths sector after China, the world’s largest exporter of the 17 elements used to make an array of products from smartphones to night-vision goggles, said it would expand quotas for rare earths to include iron alloys made from rare earths. China controls 95% of the global export market for rare earths and has not been shy about slashing quotas in the past year, a policy that has caused a surge in prices for the metals.
The news has led to a sector-wide rally in rare earths stocks as the Rare Earth Stocks Index is surging 3.9% ...China also vowed to intensify its efforts to crack down on rare earths smuggling. In the past year, the country has bolstered its efforts to shutter illegal rare earths mines in a bid to reduce pollution and the latest effort is further proof China is serious about stamping out its black market for rare earths. Beijing warned companies using backdoor methods to move rare earths out of the country will now face stiffer penalties.
Illegal rare earth exports from China have amounted to as much as 10,000 tonnes of supply last year, according to some industry estimates, the Financial Post reported. Shares of Molycorp (MCP), the largest U.S.-based rare earths miner, are up 4% as are shares of Rare Element Resources (REE) and Market Vectors Rare Earth/Strategic Metals ETF (REMX), the lone rare earths ETF, are both higher by over 1%.

This is very good news for LinkedIn and a much-needed boost for the IPO market. It’s great to see a company go public when it makes strategic sense for the business, and we’re pleased that trading on SecondMarket helped contribute to a successful IPO. This IPO also underscores the point that even for an exciting, innovative company like LinkedIn, it can take nearly a decade before the time is right to go public.”

PTR est le plus gros groupe pétrolier de Chine. Côté aux bourses de New York, de Shangaï et de Hong Kong, la compagnie est l'une des plus grosses sociétés mondiales présentement et va être officiellement la No 1 dans 10 ans.

The European Commission has approved PetroChina Co's (NYSE: PTR, SHA: 601857, HKG: 0857) proposal to purchase a stake in British chemical maker Ineos Group's two refineries in Scotland and France. PetroChina will pay a total $1.02 billion for a 51% stake in the Scottish refinery and a 45% stake in the French refinery.

Canadian commodity hedge fund manager Eric Sprott was shifting his precious metals-focused bets during Q1 as the huge bull run for gold and silver continued.
In recent months, Sprott has been particularly bullish on silver, as the metal went stratospheric before pulling back sharply in commodities trading. In an interview in early April, Sprott predicted silver could go to $100 an ounce and called it “the investment of this decade.” In early May, he called the underperformance of silver miners as compared to the metal itself, “shocking.”
A look at Sprott Asset Management’s top-15 U.S.-listed equity holdings from the end of Q1 shows that the bullion-backed Sprott Physical Gold Trust ETV (PHYS), which debuted in early 2010, remained the firm’s largest position. Sprott also introduced a similar, silver-backed entity in late 2010, the Sprott Physical Silver Trust (PSLV). Elsewhere, Sprott was putting capital to work, with a new stake in gold miner Extorre Gold Mines (XG) and increased stakes in Yamana Gold (AUY), Brigus Gold (BRD), Eldorado Gold (EGO), and Sprott Resource Lending (SILU), a Sprott-controlled firm that provides funding for commodities companies.
Elsewhere, Sprott was trimming stakes in Barrick Gold (ABX), Golden Minerals (AUMN), Alexco Resource (AXU), Claude Resources (CGR), IAMGold (IAG) and Exeter Resource (XRA). Sprott was reducing its largest silver bets in the three months ended March 31. Sprott slashed its Silver Wheaton (SLW) and First Majestic Silver (AG) stakes during the period, but the latter was nonetheless the firm’s second-largest equity holding heading into Q2.

LinkedIn Corp., the online professional networking service seen as a bellwether among a crop of promising Internet firms now moving to the public markets, is expected to make its IPO debut on Thursday.
The stock is expected to launch on the New York Stock Exchange, under the ticker “LNKD.” LinkedIn’s IPO has been highly anticipated, as it’s the first among a batch of relatively mature, high-profile technology companies working in the social network space to go public.

LinkedIn is currently planning to price its offering of 7.8 million shares between $32 and $35 a share, which will give the Mountain View, Calif.-based company a valuation between $3 billion and $3.3 billion.
