100 milliards Zuckie? 80 c'est ok....

Facebook shares are about to be halted by the sound of it. A report from Bloomberg noted that Facebook has asked companies which participate in trading of Facebook shares to stop trading shares at the beginning of April. If so, sales this week will be the last sales. A trader has said that he was also told about the lock-up news from one of his private share exchange contacts.

The news is obviously for the cooling off of any valuation gaps ahead of Facebook’s formal initial public offering. With valuations having ranged around $75 billion and $80 billion, it is too soon to know what sort of formal price valuation will be given to Facebook when the IPO hits the market in the weeks ahead.

Our take is and has always been that CEO Mark Zuckerberg wants as close to a $100 billion valuation. There is not much logic as to why that number stands out other than that it is highly impressive. Either way, Facebook is likely to be a record-breaking IPO and it is expected to create many new overnight millionaires.

NOK.nyse

Even while admitting that its sample was biased toward younger, more tech-savvy consumers, Baird Equity Research demonstrates yet again what a juggernaut Apple Inc. Forbes reports that in an on-line survey of 488 potential customers, 24% indicated that they would be purchasing a new iPad in the next three months.

Here are some other eye-openers:

  • 48% of existing iPad owners will buy a new iPad
  • 42% of new iPad purchasers are first-timers
  • 15% of customers will buy a discounted iPad 2
  • 60% plan to buy the 4G LTE version of the new iPad

Forbes also nailed the most interesting result of the survey:

Although 81% of of these tech savvy online respondents had a pretty good idea what 4G meant, only 41% thought they knew what LTE was. Of that 41%, 13% correctly identified it as an acronym for “Long Term Evolution.” (Other guesses: “Light Transfer Expansion” and “Long Telecom Exposure.”) More than 20% thought it was a proprietary technology.

1 jour plus tard.....TEVA arrive !....

AstraZeneca had lost a patent ruling and that the company’s anti-pyschotic drug Seroquel lost its patent protection today. That’s all it took for Teva Pharmaceuticals Industries Ltd. to kick out its quetiapine generic for Seroquel.

Teva’s price sheet shows the difference a patent makes in the UK. An equal supply of 100-mg coated tablets of Seroquel costs about $180 compared with the generic cost of about $27. In its announcement, Teva notes that it has released 10 new products in 11 weeks, and 7 of those came on the first day of patent expiration.

On March 8th, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. announced that Starbucks Corp. would be making a single-cup coffee machine to compete with Green Mountain’s Keurig system. Shares of Green Mountain plunged to below $53 on March 9th.

A month earlier, on February 15th, Green Mountain’s founder and chairman Robert Stiller sold 500,000 shares at $65.94/share. On February he sold another 500,000 shares at $66.68. Good timing or trading on inside information? If Stiller had waited until March 9th, his take would have dropped to around $53 million. Stiller remains Green Mountain’s largest shareholder, with 13.4 million shares (about 8.7% of shares outstanding).

Green Mountain loses patent protection on its Keurig system later this year
