Is Dell shopping for a networking equipment company to buy?
Canaccord Genuity analyst Paul Mansky thinks so. In a research note this morning, he notes that Dell “has been busily assembling a full IT stack aimed at realigning the company away from secularly less attractive legacy businesses (like PCs) and incrementally toward future growth in the enterprise.” But he adds that “given networking will most likely be among the most critical source of intelligence” helping to reshape the stack, “not owning this technology puts Dell at risk of simply hopping from one commoditized business into another.”
Ergo, he thinks Dell will be shopping for a networking company, and soon, for several reasons:
The PC market is arguably headed into an accelerating secular decline (units and ASPs) at the hands of tablets – Dell’s cash engine.
Dell has clearly been seeing success cross-selling Ethernet switching with servers and storage, evidenced by reported results and qualitative commentary from Dell executives.
Dell’s this week made a shelf filing for a potential $3.5 billion debt filing; the company also has $7 billion in net cash.
Mansky says his bet is that Dell with bid for Brocade, a company he rates a Buy with a $7.50 price target; he thinks Dell; could pay as much as $10 for the company.

Sino-Forest, which is based in Hong Kong and Mississauga, Ontario, dropped as much as 25 percent and was C$3.75 lower at C$14.46 when trading was suspended on the Toronto Stock Exchange yesterday. The amount of land the company reported buying from Lincang City in Yunnan doesn’t match city records, Block, the Hong Kong-based founder of Muddy Waters Research, said in a report. Sino-Forest couldn’t have produced as much timber in the area as it claimed, said Block, who stands to make money from a decline in the company’s shares.

Peru faces a run-off election for president on June 5th, and that has led the existing government to issue a 12-month suspension of silver mining concessions in the world’s second largest producer of silver. Peru produced about 116 million ounces of silver in 2010, second only to Mexico’s 129 million ounces. Until last year, Peru was the world’s largest producer of silver.
The suspension affects four provinces where miners are either on indefinite strike or protesters are objecting to new mining operations. Bear Creek Mining Corp. (OTC: BCEKF) and Rio Alto Mining Ltd. (OTC: RIOAF) are among the companies facing withdrawal of mining concessions. Bear Creek’s Santa Ana silver project, for example is estimated to have an 11 year production life and yield about 47.4 million ounces of silver. Rio Alto’s La Arena project is set to produce 2.8 million ounces of gold and 1.7 billion pounds of copper. Shares of both companies have fallen about -10% in the last few days.
Both Barrick Gold Corp. (NYSE: ABX) and Newmont Mining Corp. (NYSE: NEM) already operate gold mines in the province where Rio Alto is seeking a concession. Rio Alto officials believe that residents of the province support mining.

Home Inns & Hotels Management Inc (NASDAQ: HMIN), China's second biggest budget hotel chain by number of rooms, will spend $470 million taking over Shanghai Motel Management Inc from Morgan Stanley and other shareholders, said Home Inns & Hotels CEO Sun Jian.
The price, $470 million for a 100% stake, was well below the $1 billion Morgan Stanley had asked for its 60% stake in Shanghai Motel Management Inc, also known as Motel 168. Home Inns & Hotels will pay $305 million in cash and the remainder in 8.15 million ordinary shares at $20.185 apiece.
Morgan Stanley was frustrated with the investment in Motel 168 because it had not been able to go public due to the complicated stock ownership, people close to the deal said. "Part of it [the $470 million deal] will be done in Home Inns & Hotels shares that are highly likely to gain in value in the future, so it is not a bad deal for Morgan Stanley."
Motel 168, China's fourth biggest branded budget hotel chain by number of rooms, was founded in 2003. Morgan Stanley purchased a 20% stake in it for $20 million in 2005, when Motel 168 had just 16 hotels. It later increased the holdings to around 60% for an undisclosed investment. Now it has 281 hotels with its total asset evaluated to be worth $1.76 billion. Excluding the franchises, it has 144 hotels valued at $900 million.
Home Inns & Hotels currently operates 848 hotels with 97,321 rooms. It posted $115.5 million in revenues in Q1 2011, up 10.8% from a year earlier.
Motel 168 posted $262 million in revenues in 2010.

Walmart China said it has received regulatory approval to buy out the remaining stake of Trust-Mart, a Chinese supermarket chain, which it doesn't already own. Antitrust assessment of the purchase has been completed, and the deal is expected to be finalized by the end of June, according to Walmart China. Walmart China originally paid $264 million for a 35% stake in Trust-Mart and offered a $376 million loan to its shareholders for a 30% voting right in 2007.

Trust-Mart was founded in 1998 in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province. It was operating 104 stores across China's largest cities and employed over 30,000 people in 2009, during which it reported ¥16.5 billion in revenues. Walmart was operating 333 stores in China by the end of April; its revenue from China climbed to $7.5 billion last year.

RMS Systems Inc. has recently completed the installation of the RigManager system on the first drilling rig located in the United States. That rig has now spud the first well using the RigManager system. Dave Hall, president and chief executive officer of RMS, stated, "This is a big step in the growth of RMS; I believe it will be a stepping stone to RMS growing significantly in the United States." The United States drilling rig market is approximately three times the size of Canada's, and rigs in the United States tend not to suffer from the prolonged downtime associated with breakup experienced in Canada.

Microsoft is expected to show off the new touch-screen tablet version of Windows next week for the first time, but it probably won't ship until the middle of 2012 at the earliest.
By then, the iPad will have been on the market for more than two years, and other competitors like Android, RIM's PlayBook... and HP's TouchPad will have been out for about a year.
Is that too late?
A report today by Citi says no. Even though Citi estimates Microsoft won't enter the market until at least 70 million tablets have already been sold, there's still plenty of room for Microsoft to thrive and become "#2 behind iPad."
