China Southern Airlines and Air China , two of the nation's top three carriers, have for the first time said that they will buy the homegrown C919 jumbo jet at an ongoing air show in Singapore. Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, established in 2008 for self-dependent design and production of aircrafts, had previously said it aimed to sell 100 C919 airplanes in 2010 and 2,000 within 20 years.
"We plan to buy 30 aircrafts and phase out 10 aircrafts that have been in use for 15 years or more this year," said Air China vice president He Li. "China's domestic aviation market will serve 700 million passengers, double the current traffic, 10 years from now." He did not disclose how many C919 jets Air China wishes to buy. Dong Suguang, vice president of China Southern Airlines, said they would buy the C919 "when necessary".
