Buy on rumors-Sell on news

Centamin Egypt
Shares in gold explorer Centamin Egypt have continued to rise on rumours that the company may be taken over by Canada's Barrick Gold or NASDAQ-listed Newmont Mining. Shares in the Perth-based firm were up 8.57 per cent to yesterday's close, though they fell in Toronto after the rumour was already priced in late last week. In London, where Centamin is preparing for a migration to a main listing from the AIM board, shares rose by 4.6 per cent. No statement has been issued on the speculation. No news either on Barrick's mooted interest in Prominent Hill – the project OZ Minerals was left with following its $US1.386 billion rescue deal with China Minmetals. In a letter to shareholders, OZ said it would focus on rebuilding its position from the base of Prominent Hill and $US575 million in the bank. If a cashed-up OZ is no longer a target then Barrick will no doubt look for other mid-cap players.
