Le groupe minier brésilien Vale a déclaré, cette nuit, qu’il ne modifierait pas son programme de construction de navires gigantesques, baptisés « Valemax », en dépit de la récente décision de la Chine de leur bloquer l’accès à ses ports. Sur ce programme de construction de 29 bateaux, 17 sont en train d’être construits sur le sol chinois. Mardi, Pékin avait annoncé qu’il n’accepterait plus l’accostage de ces transporteurs géants, une mesure justifiée par des raisons de sécurité, mais interprétée par les analystes comme destinée à protéger ses propres transporteurs maritimes. Ces derniers ont en effet pris de plein fouet le tassement du trafic maritime mondial, concomitant avec l’arrivée sur le marché international de nouveaux navires fraîchement sortis des chantiers navals. Les tarifs des transporteurs ont chuté d’environ 70% depuis octobre. Alors que le Brésil est l’un des principaux exportateurs mondiaux de matières premières, la Chine, qui en est le premier consommateur, redoute de subir le dictat de la première économie sud-américaine.

L'âge du smartphone s'ouvre sous la férule d'Apple et de Samsung.Le Californien et le coréen viennent de boucler un extraordinaire trimestre, qui conforte leur mainmise sur ce marché d'avenir. Au troisième trimestre, ils avaient tous les deux dépassé Nokia en volume de ventes de smartphones. La tendance s'est confirmée à la fin de l'année : Apple a vendu 37 millions d'iPhone et Samsung 36,5 milions, selon Strategy Analytics. Soit une part de marché proche de 24 % pour chacun de ces nouveaux rois de la mobilité.
Au total, en 2011, Apple et Samsung sont parvenus à doubler le géant déchu Nokia. C'est le Coréen qui décroche la première place sur le podium (20 %), suivi de très près par l'Américain (19 %). Nokia, qui détenait le tiers de ce marché en 2010, n'en a plus que 16 %. Il est vrai que le Lumia son premier window phone, n'a été vendu que pendant les deux derniers mois de l'année.

Les premiers Windows Phone du fabricant finlandais séduisent puisque les Lumia 710 et 800 se seraient déjà écoulé à plus d’un million d’exemplaires.

Nokia aurait envoyé aux différents revendeurs 1,3 million d’exemplaires des lumia 700 et 800, ses premiers Windows Phone. C’est ce que révèle Bloomberg qui se base sur les estimations de 22 cabinets d’analyse sur les mois de novembre et décembre 2011.

« C’est prometteur » a expliqué l’un des consultants. « Si Nokia est capable de continuer, cela lui permettra de retrouver une position crédible auprès des investisseurs. » Des chiffres encourageants car le successeur, le Lumia 900, doit arriver très prochainement. The world's biggest coffee chain plans to sell beer and wine in as many as 12 cafes in Atlanta and Southern California by the end of the year, as it expands beyond its well-known coffee.
Starbucks introduced those beverages to a Seattle cafe in October 2010. It now sells beer and wine, as well as evening snacks like cheese plates, flatbread and desserts, in five Seattle-area stores and in one cafe in Portland, Oregon. Beer sells for $5 and wine prices range from $7 to $9.
The company, which is testing beer and wine sales in Spain, previously announced plans to bring the new "adult" beverages to as many as seven Chicago-area cafes by the end of 2012.

Hier soir, les autorités vietnamiennes ont confirmé qu’elles avaient retrouvé, pour la première fois depuis avril 2010, le virus H5N1 dans le cadavre d’un jeune fermier du delta du Mékong. La veille, c’est un enfant de deux ans qui était décédé de la maladie au Cambodge. Dans les deux cas, les victimes avaient été en contact avec des volailles malades.

Des infections ont aussi été identifiées, ces dernières semaines, en Chine et en Indonésie. RBC Capital analyst Mike Abramsky this morning repeated his Outperform rating on Apple upping his target on the stock to $525 from $500, in anticipation of both strong Q1 results driven by iPhone demand and healthy Q2 guidance. The company reports December quarter results next week.
The analyst now sees Q1 revenue of $40.2 billion, with profits of $11 a share, up from a previous forecats of $48.6 billion and $10. The Street consensus is $38.7 billion and $9.95. “We expect a favorable reaction given the Street expectations were reset following the prior FY Q4 miss,” he writes.
For FY Q2, he expects guidance to be $32 billion in revenue and profits of $8 a share, just above the Street at $31.8 billion and $7.84. He notes that Q2 guidance may include expected global iPhone rollouts and a March iPad 3 launch.

Goshi Hosono, le ministre de l'Environnement également chargé du traitement de l'accident de Fukushima, avait déclaré plus tôt ce mois que le gouvernement voulait fixer une durée maximum légale de 40 ans, alors qu'aucune limite d'exploitation n'est aujourd'hui précisée dans la loi.
"Il n'y a pas de changement à la limite de base de 40 ans, mais des exceptions", a insisté M. Fujimura.
La proposition d'accorder une extension d'usage de 20 ans en sus des 40 ans prévus, une hypothèse évoquée mardi par la presse, a immédiatement suscité des critiques des opposants à l'énergie nucléaire, remontés depuis l'accident de la centrale de Fukushima provoqué par le séisme et le tsunami dévastateurs du 11 mars.
"C'est incroyable", s'est énervé Junichi Sato, directeur de l'association écologiste Greenpeace Japon.
Et d'ajouter: "le risque est inacceptable pour le peuple du Japon, surtout quand il souffre déjà des effets continus de la crise de Fukushima".

There are 433 operable reactors globally and 62 under construction around the world, according to the WNA. China is building 26, plans to construct another 51 and has proposed 120 others, the WNA data show. Developing nations are adding nuclear capacity to meet growing electricity demand and to diversify away from power generated from oil, gas and coal.

It will be full steam ahead in China, India and other developing nations, says Casey Research Chairman Doug Casey, and the Western world is tiny in comparison. In fact, "I'd say uranium is a great place to be for at least the next generation."

Though the underlying investment trends for the 2011 uranium market were directly impacted by the nuclear tragedy at Fukushima in March, Gavin Wendt, Founding Director & Senior Resource Analyst at MineLife foresees a longer term bullish uranium investment thesis. “From a broader perspective, the history of the past 30 years in the uranium industry with respect to previous incidents at Three Mile Island in the USA and Chernobyl in the Ukraine demonstrated that base demand did not fall, as existing reactors in use worldwide were not shut down.”

In a recent interview Cameco Corp’s CEO Tim Gitzel said some investors underestimate the potential for supply shortfalls to spur higher prices for the nuclear fuel. From the article in Bloomberg:

Deux études ont été menées sur 2 000 personnes désirant arrêter de fumer, un tiers d’entre elles bénéficiaient du nouveau médicament (1 mg deux fois par jour), un autre tiers du bupropion ou Zyban (150 mg deux fois par jour) et le dernier groupe un placebo (médicament inactif).
L’administration du médicament se fit pendant 12 semaines mais le suivi du patient dura une année complète de manière à pouvoir mesurer les taux d’abstinence de chacun. A la fin des 12 semaines de traitement, ce taux fut globalement très positif avec 44 % d’abstinence pour la varénicline, 29,5 % pour le bupropion et 17,7 % pour le placebo. Neuf mois après l’arrêt du traitement, ces écarts significatifs observés avec le bupropion tendent à diminuer avec 21,9 % d’abstinence pour la varénicline contre 16,1 % pour le bupropion.
Une autre étude a suivi deux groupes de patients traités avec Chantix l’un pendant 3 mois (+ 3 mois de placebo) à un groupe traité pendant six mois. Un an après le début de la prise en charge, l’abstinence tabagique était de 70,5 % chez les patients traités 6 mois, contre 49,6 % chez les patients traités 3 mois. En conclusion, un traitement plus long augmente les chances de succès.

Maybe the company can pull a rabbit out of a hat and turnaround.

Un communiqué du gouvernement indique que la vente a été approuvée par un comité ministériel de cinq membres chargé de la privatisation. Une source au ministère des Finances a donné le prix.

The numbers do not add up. Sears Holdings has over 4,000 full-line and specialty stores. Same-store sales for the eight weeks which ended December 25 were down 5.2%. That figure represents a sharp acceleration of negative numbers from the earlier part of 2011. But, Sears Holdings only plans to close 100 to 120 Kmart and Sears Full-line stores.

Sears is in great enough trouble so that shuttering 3% of locations barely dents the problem. The Kmart and Sears store networks must have a larger portion of their outlets which underperform enough not to be profitable, or are only marginally so.

Sears problems are not new. If they were management could make the argument that it might turn the retailer around with only modest store cuts. But, Sears is now struggling to stay a viable company. A 3% cut in locations is not nearly enough.

It is going to be a “great year”! Even though there will be slight improvement in Europe, Americans are sick of hearing about European problems, and will once again focus on the home front. This will lift sprits and markets will rise. The economic outlook in this country is not that bad, at least as bad as the “talking heads” try to report it for the sake of having something to say in front of the cameras. “People are spending money, and enjoying life.”

Energy will lead the way, with natural gas production coming into the forefront; Chesapeake Energy has a foothold in all energy positions such as land, production, and transport.

Everyday use stocks such as coffee will rise due to daily usage companies like Coffee holding Company , Starbucks and Caribou will be a profitable venture for both long & short positions.

My "guess" is the market finishes higher in 2012, I believe the economy is improving slowly and will continue to do so, get Europe out of the news the US market moves higher.

Energy will be a good sector next year, although natural gas prices will remain low in the US. Oil goes higher for multiple reasons, geo-political risks (Iran) and improving world economies. I have felt gold has been in a bubble for over a year, so I don't see it going higher.

I am a slow and steady investor so I don't have any "hot" stock picks, I will stick with my MCD, KO and others.

Obama will be re-elected in a very close race, mostly due to the Republicans not having a strong candidate. Republicans maintain control of the House and the Senate becomes split 50/50.

In the first half of 2012, the US economy continues to improve, leading to declining unemployment, and German and French politicians refuse to let Europe implode. As a result, US stocks climb a wall of worry. Mega caps, the cheapest stocks in the market, outperform small caps, and dividend-payers outperform non-dividend-payers as growing numbers of retirees look for yield.

In the back half of 2012 or H1 2013, concerns grow about the longer term economic outlook, due to demographics and rising taxes and spending cuts as governments strive to improve their balance sheets. In June, Governor Brian Sandoval, a former Nevada Gaming Commission Chairman, signed the legislation into law. Earlier this year, Washington, D.C., became the first U.S. jurisdiction to pass a law allowing online gambling played within its geographic limits, but the law has still not been implemented. Several other states have debated or introduced bills that would legalize online gambling within its borders.

The Nevada regulations would allow the state’s casinos to launch gambling websites for players within the state’s borders by the end of 2012. Six companies have already filed an application for a Nevada license. The main operator of the website must be a casino company, but other companies will be allowed to provide software or other services to the websites.

The regulations state that all bets received by the website must be placed within Nevada until federal law changes or the Justice Department states that bets may be accepted from outside the state.

The list of reasons that Best Buy’s NASDAQ: BBY board should fire CEO Brian Dunn just got longer. A number of orders made by customers from bestbuy.com will not be delivered by Christmas. And, Best Buy told some of the customers about the problem in only the last day or so.
According to Gizmodo Best Buy has reacted to the situation with the following statement,
“Due to overwhelming demand of hot product offerings on BestBuy.com during the November and December time period, we have encountered a situation that has affected redemption of some of our customers’ online orders. We are very sorry for the inconvenience this has caused and we have notified the affected customers.”
Best Buy has been one of the most poorly run large companies in America for a number of quarters. Wall St. was deeply disappointed recently when the retailer posted a 22% drop in earnings to $.42 for the quarter that ended on November 26. Best Buy said same-store sales in the next fiscal year will drop 3%.
Best Buy shares have fallen from a 52-week high of $36.33 to $22.99, near a 52-week low. Dunn has been at the retailer for 25 years, and has been CEO since 2009.

The boom in shale gas production killed that idea, but the company’s plant at Sabine Pass texas is built and now the company wants to convert the plant to an export facility that would liquefy US-produced natural gas, load the LNG onto tanker ships, and send it to Japan or India or Korea where prices are nearer $13/tcf .

Google a une part de marché comprise entre 46 et 61% sur tous les marchés.
"En Allemagne, Android culmine à 61% de parts de marché sur la période comprise entre septembre et novembre, et le Samsung Galaxy S II est en tête des ventes".

All of that comes as the company tells the Street demand is falling in some large markets for solar energy. Hence, the solar stocks are responding accordingly, with SunPower (SPWR) down 32 cents, or 5%, a5 $5.99, Yingli Green Energy(YGE) down 18 cents, or almost 5%, at $3.70, and Trina Solar (TSL) down 40 cents, or 6%, at $6.73. One of the few gainers in the pre-market is ReneSola(SOL), up 3 cents, or 2%, at $1.58.
First Solar said it sees sales this year in a range of $2.8 billion to $2.9 billion, down from its prior forecast of $3 billion to $3.3 billion, and below the Street consensus of $3.2 billion. Profit per share is expected $5.75 to $6, below the average $6.88 estimate.
For 2012, the company sees revenue of $3.7 billion to $4 billion, and EPS of $3.75 to $4.25. That is below the consensus $4.1 billion and $7.42 per share.
Chairman and interim CEO Mike Ahearn said that the company was “recalibrating our business to focus on building and serving sustainable markets rather than pursuing subsidized markets,” from which he hoped to derive the majority of the company’s revenue by the end of 2014.

It doesn’t appear Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) has any blockbusters up its sleeve, but the company has successfully added some big-selling medications that could help ease the pain when cheaper generic copies start eating away at the company’s multi-billion dollar seller Lipitor cholesterol drug this November.
The world’s largest drug company is counting on the arthritis pill tofacitinib to join the fold of key offerings. If so, it will link up with Pfizer’s other recent acquisitions in pain and inflammation to ease the sting of losing patent protection for Lipitor. The company’s arthritis drug Enbrel, which it gained in the purchase of Wyeth in 2009, was Pfizer’s second-best seller last year with revenue of more than $3 billion. Last year’s purchase of King Pharmaceuticals brought Pfizer several additional painkillers.
At least one analyst thinks Pfizer has hit a home run with tofacitinib. Catherine Arnold told Bloomberg that the new drug is a “game-changer,” and may bring in more than $2.6 billion a year. She emphasized the estimate could be conservative given the current market for rheumatoid arthritis is $22 billion. The Pfizer treatment offers a dosing advantage because it’s given orally instead of injected like the other drugs on the market.

Les quotas de production de l'Organisation des pays exportateurs de pétrole , qui regroupe douze pays et pompe 35% de l'or noir mondial, sont fixés à 24,84 millions de barils par jour (mb/j) depuis janvier 2009, et devraient selon toutes les attentes être reconduits pour la neuvième fois.
Mais l'offre réelle des onze pays soumis aux quotas (l'Irak en est exclu) se situe bien au-delà de ce plafond de production - elle s'élevait en novembre à 27,97 mb/j selon l'Agence internationale de l'Energie (AIE).
La production totale de l'Opep était en novembre de 30,68 mb/j, son plus haut niveau depuis plus de trois ans.
"Il n'y a pas de pénurie ou d'excès dans l'offre (...)???? cet équilibre amènera probablement à ne pas changer le plafond de production actuel", a estimé le ministre koweïtien Mohammed al-Bassiri.

Fuel cell energy inc... a U.S. maker of fuel-cell power plants, jumped the most in three months on an agreement to supply equipment to Spain’s Abengoa SA for biogas project.

Abengoa plans to use FuelCell’s products at projects it will develop in Europe and latin America that will convert biogas into electricity, the companies said today in a statement. The Spanish company will initially install a 300- kilowatt fuel-cell plant at its headquarters in Seville.

FuelCell’s systems run on natural gas or biogas, methane produced through wastewater treatment, food processing and other renewable sources.

C’est le LA Times qui publie l’info, un iPad 3, avec un écran Retina Display soit une excellente définition d’affichage. On parle de 326 points par pouces au lieu des 132 points par pouces de l’écran de l’iPad 2 actuel.

La date avancée par le journal est fixée à Février ce qui coïnciderait avec la première bougie de l’iPad 2 qui a été lancée en Mars 2011. Difficile de savoir si l’info est vraie et, même si elle est probablement tirée de sources sérieuses, dans quelle mesure elle se révélera exacte à 100%. Mais le calendrier correspond bien à ce que pourrait être la politique d’Apple pour faire face notamment à l’arrivée des tablettes concurrentes sous Android qui commencent à poser de sérieux problèmes d’image à la marque. L’arrivée de processeurs plus performants, l’annonce d’écrans de très bonne définition employant des technologies exceptionnelles font qu’Apple doit vraiment réagir.

En ce qui concerne le pétrole, les Etats-Unis sont très optimistes. Le potentiel des ressources en shale oil pourrait représenter plus de six milliards de barils !

Pour le seul gisement de Bakken Shale, les ressources s’élèveraient entre trois et 4,3 milliards de barils selon l’U.S. Geological Survey. Hors Alaska, ce gisement deviendrait le plus grand gisement de pétrole des Etats-Unis.

L’effet BP : Le golfe du Mexique a été mis en quarantaine. L’offshore est décrié. La production de cette région devrait baisser de 82 000 barils par jour en 2011. Par conséquent, l’onshorerevient à la mode.

Les coûts d’exploitation sont bien moins élevés que le pétrole offshore. Un baril à 40 $ rend l’exploitation des shale oil rentable. Avec les prix actuels, les producteurs se paient même le luxe d’avoir des retours sur investissement proche de 100% !

Les shale oil sont essentiels pour réduire la dépendance énergétique américaine. Ils pourraient remplacer jusqu’à 10% des importations américaines quotidiennes.

Surging economic incipient superpowers India and China remain committed to generating electricity with the atom as one of their best options to provide power to their populations’ surging demand.

And now Bill Gates is getting into the act in China, promoting a newer and reportedly safer reactor design, telling an audience at China's Ministry of Science and Technology about a project supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, “The idea is to be very low cost, very safe and generate very little waste. All these new designs are going to be incredibly safe,” Gates insisted, adding that “they require no human action to remain safe at all times.” In a bow to his hosts Gates added, "China has a lot to contribute because it's solved many of the problems of poverty, not all of them but a lot of them, itself, and many Asian, south Asian and African countries are well behind, whether it's agriculture or health."

So, what’s Microsoft’s aging wonder boy promoting?

A “traveling wave reactor” (TWR) developed by Terrapower, a company he founded.

TerraPower says that its TWR reactor design could run for decades on depleted uranium and produce significantly smaller amounts of nuclear waste than conventional reactors.

Beijing is on board. State-owned China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) official Sun Qin was quoted in the Chinese media last week saying Gates was working with it on the reactor development, with Gates noting, "TerraPower is having very good discussions with CNNC and various people in the Chinese government."

TWRs are still in the design stage and yet to become actual products, but the designs’ appeal is their low-maintenance nature. TWR nuclear boosters aver that once started they would be powered by self-sustaining nuclear reactions and according to TWR proponents, the facilities could operate for four to six decades without requiring any refueling or removal of spent fuel rods.

J.P. Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz this morning raised his estimates for Apple for the December quarter, reflecting a higher forecast for iPhone sales, offset in part by a reduced outlook for iPad sales. The analyst maintains his Overweight rating and $525 price target.

“Our research inputs indicate that iPhone sales remain robust, and Mac sales holding up,” he writes in a research note. “The thrust of our call is that we are increasing iPhone estimates but slightly trimming our iPad estimates. Despite the uncertain macro environment, we expect Apple to sustain above-peer revenue growth, upward-trending margins, and incremental market penetration opportunities to fend off competitive and economic challenges.”

For the quarter, he now sees revenue of $38.69 billion and profits of $9.87 a share, up from $37.26 billion and $9.45. Street consensus is $38.02 billion and $9.78. His new gross margin forecast is 40.7%, up from 40.4%; operating margin goes to 31.6%, from 31.4%.

He now sees sales of 28 million iPhones in the quarter, up from 25.3 million previously. His fiscal 2012 forecast is now 105.5 million, up 4.2 million; for 2013 he goes to 121.7 million, up 1.5 million.

For iPads, his new forecast is 13 million, down from 13.3 million. “We see no structural change to the iPad demand environment, but there has been limited uplift in build activity,” he writes. “To a lesser extent, the Amazon Kindle Fire’s better-than-expected momentum with more price sensitive consumers is a factor, too. Longer-term, we still expect the iPad’s ongoing momentum in commercial environments to accelerate.”

For the Mac, he continues to see 5.4 million units in the quarter. “Our conversations with industry participants suggest that MacBook Air momentum continues, and we do not anticipate major competition from Ultrabooks, yet,” he writes.

Anadarko Petroleum Corp. (NYSE: APC) announced Monday that the oil field discovery off the coast of Mozambique is their largest find, ever.
The East African oil field is reported to have 15 to 30 trillion cubic feet of recoverable natural gas, up from an estimated 6 trillion cubic feet, reports Bloomberg Businessweek.
The find is large enough to meet the needs of U.S. demand for one year.
"This could be one of the most important natural gas fields discovered in the last 10 years," Anadarko Chairman and CEO James Hackett said in the company’s prepared statement.
Construction of the liquefied natural gas field is set to begin in 2013 after investment plans are completed. According to the Associated Press, Anadarko plans to begin production in 2018, and exports will mainly go to China and Japan.
Italian energy company, Eni SpA, made a similar large discovery in October. Mozambique is now a potential major gas exporter says Bloomberg.
